Geology

Extensive alluvial deposits have accumulated along its lower course. Cassiterite, the only tin mineral identified in the area, is a major component in heavy-mineral fractions from the Kanuti Kilolitna River. (Barker and Foley (1986))

Exploration and site history

• Exploration — In 1978 through 1980, the Bureau of Mines collected a series of 514 panned concentrates from selected granitic regions along a section of the Trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, bounded on the south by Livengood and on the north by the Koyukuk River, 1978–1980 (Barker (1983))
